Seasonal sweetness, frozen on a stick.
Our ongoing mission: to explore strange new flavors, to seek out new farms and new local ingredients, and to boldly go where no popsicle has gone before.
Little Bee Pops are "certified crap*-free" -- made from fresh local produce, local honey, and healthy fats like flax and almond milk. We're fiercely local - with all of our produce coming from within 150 miles of the Bay Area. Why are we here? Well, we are Moms (and Aunties) that believe childhood should be full of awesome. What’s awesome? Icy summer treats at the park. What’s not awesome? Scary crap hidden in foods marketed to kids! Little Bee Pops is about creating a healthy, happy, and crap-free childhood. It’s also about supporting local farmers and beekeepers, because a strong local agricultural economy? YUM! * crap (n): corn syrup, flavor chemicals, food dyes, preservatives, and all the scary unpronounceable stuff that's found in factory-produced treats that are marketed to kids. How it all began:
It wasn't that long ago that Little Bee Pops was nothing more than a mother-daughter pipe dream. My name is Liz Snyder, and I'm a sustainable food activist, parent, foodie, and unabashed geek. I never thought that "entrepreneur" would be making an appearance on my resume.
One hot summer afternoon my then-6-year-old Helen (aka our “Little Bee”) first came up with the idea for Little Bee Pops. Basically, she was sick & tired of not being allowed to get treats from the ice cream cart at the park (yes, I'm a meanie food snob who never lets her buy that stuff - have you looked at the ingredients?). I’m also pretty sure she was tired of hearing her Mom rant about a market flooded with cheap, subsidized corn & soy creating a toxic food supply full of corn syrup and additives that was then fobbed off on the youngest, most unsuspecting consumers. Ask for a treat, get a lecture on agricultural economics. Yes, I am that mom. With a long-suffering eyeroll, she said “Mom, why don’t you sell your pops at the park? Then moms and kids could be happy” and stormed away. My "so crazy it just might work" gears started to turn. And with that, the idea for Little Bee Pops was born. It took about 6 months for me to start taking the idea seriously, but this past winter I teamed up with my best friend Lilia to put our idea out there to the world on crowdfunding website Kickstarter. To our pleasure and amazement, we reached our funding goal with 365 fabulous backers, and here we are! See our Kickstarter video here: |
